Test your Site on Safe Browsing Site Status

Test your Site on Safe Browsing Site Status

Google Safe Browsing Report

Couple of days ago, I noticed a sudden fall in my sites traffic. It was not clear why Marks PC is experiencing a decreasing traffic. Later I discovered a harmful content in my site. Thats why Google Chrome was stopping visitors to enter my site. Then I fixed the issue with the  help of Google Safe Browsing and Webmaster Tools. In this post, Im gonna share my experience with you . . .

Warning Message from Google Chrome

About Safe Browsing Site Status

Safe browsing site status is a part of Google Transparency Report. Everyday it collects and examines billions of URLs to find out harmful contents on those websites. If a site is safe to surf then its okay.

But if harmful contents are found, Google enlists the sites in blacklist. And Chrome browser shows warnings to the visitors.

Check your Site

You can check any site on Safe Browsing Site Status. It maybe your own site or any other site you visit often. So, what are you waiting for? Lets check a site on Google Safe Browsing Site Status . . .

Follow the URL below -

Safe Browsing Site Status

Then you will get following view -

Google Safe Browsing Report

Here you can see a search box named Status of. In this box, you will enter the link of your desired website. As soon as you hit the search button, you will see the current status. If the site is okay, you will see - Not Dangerous

If any malicious contents are found, you will see the status like dangerous or harmful

Taking Actions

If youre a site owner and find your site dangerous, dont delay a second. Immediately go to the Google Webmaster and sign in there. There you will get a message for critical issues.

Sometimes you may know what is the problem exactly. Then fix it and inform the Google Webmaster that necessary actions have been made. Then you will request a review for your site.

If youre not sure about the problem, then talk to the experts. Or sometimes this problem might be caused by harmful ads shown on your site. In that case, you need to talk to the Advertisers.

And never avoid this issue. If you avoid it, then your traffic will fall dramatically. And you will lose revenues.

After taking corrective actions, Google will review your site. Within few hours (not more than 48 hours) Google will update your security status.

How to Claim a Site in Facebook

How to Claim a Site in Facebook

Get Facebook Insights

Do you know, you can claim your domain/site in Facebook to get insights? If you register your site on Facebook, you can view analytics for referral traffic, stories, user engagement and other related information. And definitely this will help you to take better actions for your site.

I always say, if Facebook were a country, it could be the most populated state of the world. Its a site with the most registered active users. No other site, even Google and Twitter cant attract users as much as Facebook. Most of the users waste their valuable time on Facebook.

But as a blogger/ web developer/ app developer, you cant either waste your time or avoid Facebook. You can take advantage of the popularity of Facebook. You can promote your website/ blog/ app on Facebook. You can do this in your way. Im not gonna interfere there!

Today Im writing about - claiming/ registering a site on Facebook. You can do this easily. All you need is just adding a simple meta tag before your closing head (</head>) tag.

Never try this trick if you -
  • Dont have a website/ blog
  • Dont have a Facebook ID

Okay, Im talking too much for a little trick! Lets back to the track -
  1. Visit this page - Facebook Insignts
  2. Domain Insights > Add your Domain
  3. A new window will appear with your name and a meta property
  4. Type your sites URL there (ie. www.markspcsolution.com)
  5. Copy the meta property (ie. <meta property="fb:admins" content="100002117543096" />) and paste it in your sites HTML closing head tag.
  6. Now hit on the get insights button.
  7. If youre done properly, you will see your domain here.

Claim your domain on Facebook Insights

Hope youve completed the task easily. But I couldnt do this as easily. Dont know why the meta property didnt appear when I was trying to implement the code in my site. Maybe something was wrong in that time when I was trying.

If anybody face the same problem, I mean if the meta property with your numeric FB ID didnt appear as shown in the above image, follow the steps below -

  • Go to Facebook Insights
  • Hit on the Add a Domain button
  • Enter your domain in the domain box
  • Find your numeric Facebook ID
  • Copy the following code and paste it in your sites HTML header section

<meta property="fb:admins" content="100002197543196" />

Replace the above numeric ID with yours. And the code should be placed before the closing head tag - </head>

You can also use several IDs here. Suppose you want multiple users to get your sites insights. Then you can use more than one ID as below -

<meta property="fb:admins" content="102117543096, 10034534562" />

Remember, this will just help you to get insights from facebook. If you wanna customize your sharing URL, Image or description you need to use Open Graph. I will discuss it later. Thanks.

How to Put Blogger Site Offline

How to Put Blogger Site Offline

Access Denied to Blogger Blog

Both Blogger and WordPress have an option to put the site offline or make it unavailable permanently or temporarily. You may need to put your site offline for a number of reasons. In this post, I will just talk about how to limit access to a blogger site. At the same time, you can deny the search engines to access your site and you can also restrict general people to view your contents.

As mentioned earlier, there could be several reasons behind putting the site offline. Such as -

  • You can restrict search engines to crawl your site. Because you would like to decorate your site first. In that case you can limit search engines access.
  • You may need to make your site unavailable temporarily due to political violations or religious issues.
  • Or may be the site could be a private one. Maybe its subject to be unavailable to the public.

Whatever the reason, or even if you dont need to put your site offline, at least you should know the way. Some bloggers even think, why I put my site offline? When Im trying to cirulate the site as much as possible? Ive already mentioned the reasons! :)

Restrict Search Engines Crawl your Site

You can limit search engines access to index your site if necessary. Follow the steps below -

  1. Go to Blogger Control Panel/ Settings/ Dashboard.
  2. Choose Settings from the left pane.
  3. Select Basic > Basic > Privacy.
  4. Choose No for both options as below.
  5. Hit on the Save Changes button.

 Privacy Option in Blogger Blog

The first No doesnt matter much. But the second No matters! If you choose No in the second option, your site will not be crawled by search engines. But everyone will be able to access your site.

Restrict Public Access to your Contents

If your site is private and you dont want people view your contents, then you can absolutely restrict public access. Follow the steps below -

  1. Go to Blogger Control Panel > Settings.
  2. Choose Basic under the Settings option.
  3. Find the Blog Readers option under Permissions section.
  4. Here you have three choices: Public, Private (Blog Authors), Private (Selected Persons).
  5. If you choose the second option, only blog authors will be able to access the site. Other people will just get a message - This is a private blog
  6. If you would like to add some readers, then choose the third option. Then add readers from your contact list or you can type their emails. Whenever they try to access your site, they have to log in.
  7. Finally, hit on the Save Changes button.

Blog Readers Permission in Blogger Site

Tips!

If your site is totally new, then you can use the Privacy option only. You can stop search engine crawl your site. Because search engines will not find enough contents in a new site. Thats why its better to write first. Then you may let search engines to index your site. But you can keep your site Public.

Later I will discuss the same thing for WordPress site.

In my previous post, I discussed about Facebook Open Graph. If youve already implemented Facebook Open Graph on your site, then creating a Twitter Card will be much easier for you. Because, Facebook Open Graph an Twitter Card is almost similar.

5 Simple Steps to Create a Card
  1. Choose a Card Type for your site - ie. Summary Card with Large Image
  2. Now get the code from there. Change it where necessary.
  3. Add the code in your sites HTML.
  4. Test your home page URL through Card Validator.
  5. Now tweet your sites link and your card will appear below the post!

Twitter Card Code including Open Graph

<meta name="twitter:card" content="Your Ultimate Choice for Computer, Internet, Blogging, SEO &amp; PC Troubleshooting Tips!" /><meta content=summary_large_image name=twitter:card/><meta name="twitter:site" content="@markspcsolution" /><meta name="twitter:creator" content="@markspcsolution" /><meta property="og:url" content="http://www.markspcsolution.com/" /><meta property="og:title" content="Marks PC Solution" /><meta property="og:description" content="There is no mistake in the world of technology - everything is learning!" /><meta property="og:image" content="http://s10.postimg.org/g0aysum0p/Marks_PC_Banner.png" />

This is exactly the same code which Im using for my site. You just need to change in the content option. And you must create an image for the card and upload it to a server. Then share the URL in the image meta.

Here is the embedded tweet for Marks PC Solution -

AddThis Social Sharing Sidebar for your Site

AddThis Social Sharing Sidebar for your Site

AddThis Sharing Sidebar

AddThis sharing sidebar is a very common gadget for social sharing. Smart developers or bloggers often use AddThis tools in their webpages. Because it looks nice and thus attracts many visitors to share your contents in their networks. And I also like it because its small in size and loads faster.

If you would like to design your own sharing buttons, then its okay. But if youre thinking of third party tool, then I recommend AddThis. Its very easy to setup. Youve to register in AddThis website. There you will get a dashboard which provides your sharing analytics!

Limitation

AddThis has both paid and free tools. Of course the paid users get more benefits. Suppose if youre a free user, then you will not have button counts in your gadget.

Registration/ Sign Up

First youve to create an account in AddThis. Creating an account is very easy here. You can sign up via Google, Facebook or Twitter. Or you can simply create an account through your email ID. The link below is the account opening page:

Create an Account in AddThis

After completing the sign up process, sign in to your account and go to the Dashboard. Here you will get Analytics and Tools menu. Go to the tools menu to check available tools for your site.

Choosing the Right Tool for your Site

As mentioned earlier, you will get several paid and free tools in the tools page. And you know I always focus on free tools. There are different types of tools such as - Sharing Tools, Follow Tools, Recommended Contents etc.

Hopefully you already know which tool is used for which work. And their setup system is almost same. So, I will just talk about Sharing Sidebar. Have a look at the sample:

AddThis Social Sharing Sitebar

Have you noticed the behavior of the above sidebar? When someone visits your site, the sidebar will be displayed in the left or right as youve configured. And the visitors can vanish the sidebar anytime by pressing a small arrow which will be located below the bar.

I think its very handy for the visitors. Because if they cant read something in the page due to the sharing bar, then they can hide it. And if the readers like your article and would like to share it, then they can get the bar back!

How to Setup?

Setting up the code is also very easy. Simply follow the steps below:
  1. Go to the Tools page.
  2. Then move to the Share Tools > Sharing Sidebar > Setup.
  3. Choose a side - Left or Right.
  4. Choose your site theme i.e. Dark, White, Transparent etc.
  5. Enter your Title if necessary (It appears above the bar).
  6. Choose number of buttons to be shown. You can also choose which buttons will appear.
  7. Hit on the Show more options if you need to adjust more.
  8. Hit on the Activate button.

Your code is now active. But in order to appear the sidebar on your page, you must place the code (The code which you get at the bottom of your settings page) in your page source. This is my code:

<!-- Go to www.addthis.com/dashboard to customize your tools --><script type="text/javascript" src="//s7.addthis.com/js/300/addthis_widget.js#pubid=ra-54caee1f0a654417" async="async"></script>

You have to place this code in your sites source code/ HTML in the <body> section. If youre using blogger, then you can place the code through HTML/JavaScript gadget.

For other websites, place the code in the <body> section.

How to Put WordPress Site Offline

How to Put WordPress Site Offline

How to Make WordPress Blog Private

WordPress Visibility option allows you to control who can visit your site, whether search engines will index it or not etc. In my last post, I discussed how to put blogger site offline. And in this post Im gonna talk about WordPress.

In my previous post, I discussed the reasons behind putting a site offline. Here I would like to repeat those reasons -

  • If your site is new, you can discourage search engines to index your site. Because a new site with insufficient content will not get a good rank.
  • If your site is private or subject to premium membership, you can disallow general people to view your contents.
  • Due to political violations or religious issues, if your social security is under threat, you can temporarily make your site unavailable instead of deleting it.

WordPress Settings Option

Site Visibility Options
  1. Login to your WordPress site and go to Admin Panel.                                                         (ie. https://munnamark.wordpress.com/wp-admin)
  2. Go to Settings from the left pane and choose Reading. (As shown in the above image) (ie.https://munnamark.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-reading.php)
  3. Now you will get the Reading Settings page.
  4. Move to the Site Visibility section. There you will get three choices.
  5. The first choice is the default option. It allows search engines to index your site.
  6. The second choice forbid search engines to index your site.
  7. And the third option makes your site private. That means only invited persons will be able to access your site.
  8. Choose any of the three options that is suitable for you.

Site Visibility Option in WordPress

Note: You can change the settings at any time.

Adding Users in a Private Site

If you make your site private, then you have to manually invite members to your site. Only invited members is capable of viewing your contents or writing posts in your site. To invite users, follow the steps below:

WordPress Users Option

  1. Go to your WordPress control Panel
  2. Choose Users > Invite New (As shown in the above image)                                         (ie. yoursite/wp-admin/users.php?page=wpcom-invite-users)
  3. Now you will get the invite users form. Type username or their emails. Choose one of the five roles (Contributor/ Author/ Editor/ Administrator/ Follower) for the invited members.
  4. Type an invitation message if necessary
  5. Finally hit on the Send Invitation button.

How to Invite New Users in WordPress

Then the invited user will get an email. If he accepts the invitation, you can view the member in the past invitation section. From there you can manage your members.

Hope youve clearly understand the topic. If you have any confusion, dont hesitate to leave a comment. :)

Making Site Compatible with AdSense Policies

Making Site Compatible with AdSense Policies

Making Site Compatible with AdSense

While applying for the AdSense, there are different ways you might get disapproved by Google. One of them is Incompatible Site. You will get a message like this - Site does not comply with Google policies. Its really frustrating when your sites content is okay but Google denies your AdSense request.

Today I would like to discuss how to solve the issue - Site does not comply with Google policies. In fact, after having the custom domain, Im also facing the same problem. But I can solve it within few days.

There are three major areas on which you have to focus in order to make your site compatible with Google AdSense policies:
  • Design and Content Guidelines
  • Technical Guidelines
  • Quality Guidelines

Though you will get a detailed discussion in Google Webmaster Guideline Page, Id like to summarize the topic for you. Because only few people have the patience to read a 1200 words + article! And some of the issues are highly technical. I will try to make them as clear as possible.

Design and Content Guidelines
  • Your site should have a clear hierarchy and text links. Every page should be accessible from at least one static text link. I suggest you to use Blog Archive and Categories.
  • Provide a sitemap for the users so that they can explore your site as they want.
  • Make your site useful and informative. Keep your contents accurate and clear. Read my contents writing guidelines . . .
  • Think about the words which users might search for and include those words in your contents post titles. Dont forget to relate your contents to those key words.
  • Images are not recognized by search engines. Use as much text as possible in your contents. And label your images properly, consider using the Alternative description too.
  • Try to find out HTML errors (if any) and fix them.

Technical Guidelines
  • Keep your site faster. Analyze the loading time of your site through various tools available over the web. Slower sites get less pageviews. So, never let it down.
  • Test your site in major browsers (ie. Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari etc.) and make sure that it appears correctly.
  • Properly use robots.txt so that search engines can crawl your site smoothly.
  • Get your domain registered in high quality servers.

Quality Guidelines
  • Build your contents primarily for the users, not for the search engines.
  • Never try to deceive/mislead your users.
  • Never follow the illegal techniques that automatically improve your search ranking position by cheating the search engines. (Black Hat SEO)
  • Differentiate your site from competitors. Keep it unique, informative and valuable for the users.

Avoid the Following Techniques
  • Generating Contents Automatically
  • Participating in Link Exchange
  • Cloaking - Showing different contents to human and search engines
  • Redirecting the Users to an Unwanted Site
  • Hiding Text/Links
  • Copying/ Stealing Contents from other Sites
  • Participating in Affiliate Programs without Sufficient Contents
  • Using Irrelevant Keywords to Improve Search Ranking
  • Spreading Virus, Malware, Spam, Phishing etc.

Violating any of the above rules may take your site down in the search engine rank position. And your site may not comply with Google AdSense Policies.
