Divide Excel Worksheet into Pages!!

Divide Excel Worksheet into Pages!!

Excel Page Layout View

If youre using Excel 2010/ 2013, you can divide your worksheet into individual pages. This exciting feature was unthinkable even on Excel 2003. At first, Microsoft introduced this Page Layout feature in Excel 2007. And its available in Excel 2010 and 2013 too.

Almost all of you are familiar with the Print Layout view of Microsoft Word. Excel Page Layout view does the same job here. If you enable Page Layout view in a worksheet, you can easily understand your print area with header and footer. And it also makes your printing task easier.

Excel 2013 Page Layout View

Applies to:
  • Excel 2007
  • Excel 2010
  • Excel 2013

Advantages of Page Layout

  • You can view how your printed document will look
  • Check where your page begins and ends
  • View headers and footers of the page
  • Print the worksheet page by page

How to Enable Page Layout View

You can enable page layout view as below:
  1. Open any worksheet or create a new one
  2. Go to the View Tab > Workbook Views > Page Layout

Page Layout Option in View Menu

You can also use the keyboard shortcuts:

Press Alt Key > Then type WP

If you would like to back to the Normal View then:

Press Alt Key > Then type WL

You can also enable Page Layout view from Status Bar. I think its the most handy option. Follow the image below:

Excel 2013 Page Layout Icon

The selected icon in the middle is Page Layout icon. The left one is for Normal View. And the right one is for Page Break Preview.

Tutorial on Goal Seek Project File Included

Tutorial on Goal Seek Project File Included

Using Goal Seek in Excel

Goal Seek helps you to find a specific target from a given data. Suppose you are required to adjust either cost or price or production unit to make a certain amount of profit. In this situation, you can use Goal Seek to find out the optimum level of input to meet your target. Here you must know that the Goal Seek can only work with a single variable.

Note: This tutorial is prepared on Excel 2013. Excel 2007 and 2010 will be much similar to version 2013.

Example 1

Lets start by a simple example. Go to Excel > Open a Blank Worksheet > Input the data as shown below:

Excel Rows and Columns

The red figures are negative values.

  • Input the figures in Sales for Product A, B and C.
  • Enter Cost of Goods Sold in the next row.
  • Deduct 3rd row from 2nd row to find out the Gross Profit. (i.e. =B2-B3)
  • Enter the other expenses in the 5th row.
  • Deduct expenses from Gross profit to find Net Profit. (i.e. =B4-B5)

Important: you must find out the Gross Profit, Net Profit through formula. Otherwise, the Goal Seek function may not work.

At the 6th row, we get the Net Profit for Product A, B and C as 250000, 180000 and 195000 respectively.

Problems & Solutions

In this settings, how can we increase the Net Profit of Product C from 195000 to 200000?

Ans: You can either increase sales, or decrease COGS and other expenses. But you have only one choice. Choose any of the three variables what you are supposed to change. Suppose, you have to change COGS. That means, cell D3. Use Goal Seek as follows:

Excel Worksheet

  • Select the D6 cell. Move to the DATA tab > What-If Analysis > Choose Goal Seek.

Input Data on Goal Seek

  • Make sure that the Set Cell box contains D6.
  • Type 200000 in To Value box.
  • Click on the By changing cell box and choose D3 from the worksheet. Then it will be automatically converted to $D$3.
  • Hit OK > You will get the following result -

Goal Seek Result

This example is easy to calculate. You can find the result through manual process. Now I would like to move to the more complex example.

Example 2

Go to Excel > Create a new worksheet. Input the data as shown below:

Date Input for Goal Seek

  • Input the price of finished goods in B1.
  • Per unit variable cost in B2.
  • Enter the total number of units produced in B3.
  • Get total variable cost by multiplying variable cost and total unit (=B3*B2).
  • Enter the fixed cost as given.
  • Multiply price with total number of units produced to find out Revenue (=B3*B1).
  • Deduct fixed cost and variable cost from revenue to determine profit (=B6-B5-B4).

In the above example, the profit is 3000. How to make it 5000?

Well, you may have several choice as:
  • Changing the price
  • Reducing the variable cost
  • Increasing the production unit etc.

Suppose, you have no way to reduce the cost or increase the production. In that situation, you can only adjust the price. Lets raise it through Goal Seek . . .

Goal Seek Example

  • Click on the cell B1
  • Move to Data > What-It Analysis > Goal Seek
  • Set Cell B1
  • To Value 5000
  • By Changing Cell, choose B1 ($B$1)
  • Hit OK > Finally Get the following result -

Goal Seek Output

Within wasting much time, you can calculate the optimum product price to earn your target profit. You just raise the price by .40 to increase the profit from 3000 to 5000. Similarly, you can also adjust variable cost or production unit. But you cant work with more than  one variable at a time.

Project File

Ive uploaded the project file in Google Drive. You can download this if necessary. The project file is saved as .xlsx format. You must need at least Excel 2007 or above to open this file.

There are two sheets - Sheet 1 and Sheet 2. Download the Goal Seek tutorial . . .

Browser Review A look back to 2014

Browser Review A look back to 2014

Browser Review

Another year has gone from our calendar. And were one more year close to the final day. 2014 was really a nice year with some technological breakthroughs. Actually we have innovations in every moment. Today I would like to write a review on Internet Browsers. In this post, I want you have a look back to the 2014.

Look at the following table:

Browser
Statistics (2014)
Statistics by Marks PC (2013-2014)
Google Chrome
56%
48%
Firefox
26%
28%
Internet Explorer
9%
13%
Opera
2%
4%
Apple Safari
4%
2%
Others
1%
5%

Here you get two statistics side by side. The first one is published by w3schools.com. You know they publish statistics month by month. Ive summed them up to show you the yearly users of the popular browsers.

And the second one is the statistics by Marks PC Solution itself. Its generated from Blogger Dashboard. Here Ive included the statistics of two years - 2013 & 2014. The browsers used by the visitors of Marks PC Solution from 2013 to 2014 are shown here.

Ive also created pie charts for better understanding. Have a look at them.

Usage Statistics of Internet Browsers

Browser Usage in Last Two Years

Reviews by Marks PC . . .

  • Google Chrome: Market leader and the most popular browser as well. Chrome has captured more than 50% share of the browser market and ever growing!
  • Mozilla Firefox: Beaten by Chrome about 2 years ago and now gonna lose its position as market challenger. Firefox has now only 26 to 28% market share and losing users to Chrome rapidly.
  • Internet Explorer: Released in 1995 and survived as #1 for more than a decade. Now just keeping the honor of default browser of Windows OS. Capturing only 10 to 12% market share, the explorer will not give you a bad browsing experience at all!
  • Opera: Tried their best to be popular in desktop environment. But it really disappoints the users! Being branded for mobile devices, Opera Mini is really successful in smart phones, tablets and featured phones.
  • Apple Safari: A default browser for Mac OS. If the browsers were reviewed by weight, Safari would be the champion in this arena! I really hate this stupid browser. Its too heavy to work with. Your system may suffer to run it. It loads pages slowly as per my experience.
  • Others: Combining all other browsers, you cant get more than 2 to 5% share. In Marks PC Solution, Ive detected these browsers - Mobile Safari, UCBrowser, Iron, Maxthon, Chromeframe, CriOS, NetFront, Netscape, Dragon etc.

Chrome has taken the first position in 2012. And now its going far away from Firefox. Nice look, continuous development, new features have made it unbeaten. Recently, Chrome has added some exciting features like - Cloud Printing, PDF conversion etc.

On the other hand, Firefox is still popular to the developers. Thousands of extensions have made it popular to the advanced users. But its heavy looking interface is mainly responsible for decline.

As a default browser, the number of users of Internet Explorer is really low. It should have at least 20% users. But its beaten by the browsing experience, compatibility and extensions (add-ons) of Chrome and Firefox. Microsoft is trying hard to make it popular. Earlier, the developers used to follow IE standards. But now they follow Firefox or Chrome sometimes!

Ive just tried to share my thoughts with you. Dont take it otherwise! Of course you got choice to discuss here . . .
